History of Mother Rose of Lima Award

 

Language Awards UPDATE:  This is the 60th year and final year(2024) this award will be presented to a senior 
who excelled in a foreign language at 10 local high schools in Schenectady County. This year each school received 
$250 award in honor of Mother Rose of Lime, one of the founders of The College of Saint Rose.

This award, given by the Schenectady Chapter of the College of Saint Rose Alumni Association, 
is given in memory of Mother Rose of Lima. Mother Rose of Lima was one of the original
founders of the college and was a language teacher at the college. 
 
The award has been give by the chapter since 1963. From 1963-69 an engraved charm was given 
to the top Latin or French language student.  In 1970 the college went co-ed so the award 
changed to a five dollar check. In the 80's the award was increased to a $50 saving bond 
and in 1998 it was increased to a $100 savings bond. In 2003 this award was increased to 
$75 check. In 2006 this award was increased to $100 check. In 2023 this award will be 
increased to $200 check. 

The following schools each will be presented an award: Colonie, Shenendehowa, Mohonasen, 
Burnt Hills/Ballston Lake, Niskayuna, Notre Dame/Bishop Gibbons, Schalmont, Scotia/Glenville, 
Schenectady and Mekeel Christian Academy .  The schools will choose one outstanding language 
student.  The award, a $200 check is given at each of the area high school's Awards and Scholarship night.
